When holding a rear mount do you only use your 'hooks' to stay in place or do you use a body triangle?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each??
I assume standard BJJ rules recognise either as a rear mount scoring position?
thanks

Rear mount - hooks in Vs. body triangle |

This is primarily from a BJJ (wearing gi) competition perspective.

I only do no-gi. I usually use the body triangle on guys the same size when I can because it's very secure and you can put lots of pressure on the lower back (and often get the tap) when they go face down. Main disadvantage I've found is that it can be harder switching to the armbar when you are locked in tight and you can only really get the arm on the side which you have your leg going across the body. Other disadvantages off the top of my head are that it can be difficult on big guys, you can put pressure on your own ankle if they are large or you roll funny, it can be slower to secure than hooks and there are leglocks people try and do against the triangle (one of which a lot of people go for but has never actually made me tap...yet). Hooks are more versatile but easier to escape. However, those escapes do leave them open to subs, which are easier to switch to with hooks, so it's all swings and roundabouts. Both are worth having in your arsenal but I'd consider the hooks essential and the body triangle an extra for those that feel comfortable with it (I've seen lots of good grapplers who never use it, I just happen to like it coz of my body type and grappling style). I only just started any type of mma, but in one of my first lessons my instructor recomended against using the body triangle as there is a very effective ankle lock (which he demonstrated and it looked very painful)
So with my limited knowledge i would say go for hooks over body triangle! |

The ankle lock works well if you cross your ankles INFRONT of your opponent. However a body triangle involves triangling your legs with them crossing alongside your opponent.
If it opens up a bit (becomes more ankle crossing than legs) and creeps round the front then the submission you suggest would become a real possibility. |

Could you not put a toe hold type lock on using your closest hand?

i think if you went for the toe hold, you'd get choked before you got the toe hold on.

To be honest, if a guy's got my back, it doesn't matter if he's got the hooks in or a triangle - I'm more concerned with what his hands are doing. Most people go for a rear naked, but others try for armbars and rear triangles etc.
If he's got the hooks in, usually if you manage to secure one of his arms, you can roll him off or atleast roll onto your back, which gives him mount, but is still better than giving up your back. Once he's got mount on you, you can switch to roll him over and land in his guard if you're quick and careful. If he's got a body triangle, as other guys have said, he's not got the flexibility to swing around too much and so you know you only really have to defend the choke, but whilst it sounds easy just to keep your chin tucked and pry his hands away, once the triangle's locked, he's there to stay and it can be a real pain to get him off. Ideally, you want to switch from hooks to body triangle periodically to keep him guessing. Simple rotation like hooks - triangle with left cross - hooks - triangle with right cross just to keep moving. Either way, if you've got his back, he's in a bad position and you're dominant, so you can take your time getting the choke or whatever you want. |
