Personally, I think the cambered bar, if any, is a whole lot cooler. But would still prefer a standard olympic bar without any padding at all.

Presumably you are finding the bar hurting your shoulders, perhaps stopping your set prematurely? Maybe it's a case of experimenting with high bar or low bar set ups? Also keeping positive pressure with the hands & wrists during the set to stop the bar rolling down your back helps.

Just find your groove and stick with it - squats are supposed to be uncomfortable

Have you tried the low bar, wide stance, powerlifting style? You dip far less that way. Otherwise, as suggested above, you might enjoy the Trap bar more.
