You cant beat bodyweight exercises. There is no point lifting heavy weights when you can get similar gains from bodyweight exercises. We have all ditched the heavy weights and now do a circuit of bodyweight exercises everyday.
These include: starjumps, pressups, crunches, lunges, calf raises, headstands and then some forward and backward rolls. Myself, Ian and Leigh feel that, combined with our new vegetarian diets, this will improve our fight performances no end. D |

Eating meat uses energy for the body to digest also being vegetarian increases red blood cell count which helps when using the blood loss method to cut weight. Our bodys become less reliant on iron to function efficiently.

I use weights. I get far more gains strength wise than I do from bodyweight only. Though in the same boat, I get far more gains conditioning wise from bodyweight stuff.
I like to do Pull ups and Dips, but these days they get a bit easy using only bodyweight, so I got a dipping belt and add weight. straight away, no need for higher reps, and the strength gains are alot higher. For top advice on strength training for MMA, check out workingclassfitness.com. and look at the Singles & Doubles books 1-2. I typically train heavy singles & doubles twice a week, as well as conditioning twice a week. At the moment, I think that Scrapper's Mod 1 is the best program you get hold of for bodyweight stuff! There are 7 workouts, not progressing from one to the next, but 7 different workouts that are all hard as hell. You are basically mixing up bodyweight stuff with skipping. and the routines are top notch. I also train Dumbell Swings and Dumbell Snatches. These I do for higher reps, but they have given me far more explosive strength than I have ever gotten from other explosive type exercises, such as bodyweight only plyometrics. Weights do have alot of merit, you just hav to know how to train them the right way! |

I switched to doing body weight exersises when i was in leicester, after years of doing weights. I found i became a lot quicker but when i grappled strong lads again they over welmed me with physical strength.
Iv resumed doing weights and my strength is slowly returing, i try to do one day of body weight excersises as well for speed. I think some people are naturally strong but if i stop weights my strength goes. I found people like hassan have barely done any weights and have good physical strength from wrestling body weight training i.e. he can do about 45 wide grip chins. Think i lot depends on genetics as well as some people may be weak in the gym but feel physically strong when grappling, i.e a lad who trains with us who is 3 stone lighter than me is freaky strong when grappling. |
