Obviously you can always be fitter, but are there any standard tests or levels which are useful thresholds? Levels below which you shouldn't step in the cage/ring/mat?
Cheers for any advice

Minimum fitness levels? |
Lead | |
|
What would you say the minumum levels of fitness are for someone wishing to step up to competition? Is there a number of reps (pressups/pullups etc.) which is a good rule of thumb, or a minimum cardio standard (e.g 2miles in 15 mins) or amount of iron lifted (squatting with bodyweight barbell etc.). I'm thinking with regard to a heavyweight if that makes a difference.

running and that is all fine but guess heavy sparring is the best way to prepare for a bout if you are fighting 3 rounds then you should treble that for sparring session....
unfortunately i didn't heed this advice.... |

If you go across to the MMA section on Tung -FU the criteria for training with the Cartel fight team have been posted there by Ian Butlin

They are a MINIMUM for when just training in the gym. 6 weeks before a fight they obviously increase.

What about fighters that don't lift heavy weights?

We encourage all the fighters to lift weights, as well as conditioning and fitness work. These are the easiest things to alter, IMO you should always aim to be stronger, fitter and better conditioned than your opponent.
It also means you can train for longer and still take onboard work for skill. |

Boxing Brit, could I email you with a few questions and get advise about what cardio and strength training I should do? It would be much appreciated.
Cheers Varqa |

Trying to achieve those strength levels is all well and good, but to say that is the minimum you should be able to achieve before you compete is way out.
Compete when you feel ready if your holding your own in training with guys who themselves compete, then you know you are physically ready. In training you find that you are gasing to quick, the you are going to have to put in the extra cardio. In MMA, running for miles, may help you lose some fat, but for the kind of fitness you need you may still find you gas after 1 min in a match. Same with sprint training thats great for helping explosive bursts in a match but not much else. The key is to be sport specific, you need to be able to go full for about 5 mins. Now obv. the ideal would be to spar but sparing can be inconsistent depending on training partners. If you want to run, a marathon is to much and 100m sprint is short. The best would prob be the1500m. At this distance it will incorporate, the aerobic and aerobic at a 50/50 split which is perfect for MMA. |

Re: Minimum fitness levels?

They're the minimum requirements for the Northern Cartel Pro fight team, Boxingbrit is not forcing them on any other team or any other fight he's merely giving out information on his teams training.
I agree with Ian that you should always aim to be stronger and better conditioned than your opponent, if technique is equal the stronger and better conditioned athlete will normally win. BigPoppaPep, can you tell us how many fights you've had? Thanks DROC "OK. Bring him back, and I will throw in the towel before the fight starts, to prevent the brutal beating" The2Crippler

Boxingbrit,
They are good yard sticks.., but a bit over the top for MMA fighters, they would be more applicable to an intermediate powerlifter. I train weights regularly, but some of those would take a while for anyone to achieve, and a hell of alot of weight training, even with good supplements/coaches/training routines.. |

My bad, it is early in the morning though!!
But still I think its good to make it clear that they are only guide lines for his club as some people who are thinking of competing may be put of by meeting those guide lines. i whole heartedly agree, that the fitter you are the better. And as long as you are strong and not carrying to much fat that is good to. I've had about about 10 amateur MMA/ sub wrestling fights. |

Re: Minimum fitness levels?

agree with that - I've done weights for a long time but would struggle to do 4x4 reps with 2x bodyweight deadlift. That's a hell of a lot - I'm 83kgs and max at 5 reps at 140 kgs (ex bar). Maybe I'm weaker than I realised

Re: Minimum fitness levels?

I think those goals are attainable for anyone, I'm weak as a kitten (Seriously, on weight lifting there's not many weaker than me) but last time I was lifting weights (Before Christmas) I was squatting nearly twice my Body weight and lifting about 1.5 times for 4x4

Re: Minimum fitness levels?

BISH BASH-you say ex bar-well if you add the 20kilo
olympic bar thats 160kg for 5 reps-1 rep more than the minimum. If you're 83 kilos i bet if you added a measly 6 kilos to the bar you would get 4 reps-exactly the requirement! |

Guess a lot of the BJJ blackbelts from the Gracie academy in Rio would not be good enough for the Cartell, since a lot of them dont touch weights.

Re: Minimum fitness levels?

Weak as a kitten?!
SFUKN if you are not on the juice and for six reps you can bench 150% your bodyweight, Squat 200%, military press 100% and dead lift 250%, you are strong!! This is what i am aiming for, I'm getting there, but I'm not there yet! Short stocky people may find they do better in the squat and bench, tall lanky guys will find the dead lift will be their stronger exercise. |

Re: Minimum fitness levels?

Sorry, I wasn't clear ... My squat was my best, I was on about 2X BW maybe a little less
Bench I was at a little less than BW and Deadlift I was about 1.5X BW DROC "OK. Bring him back, and I will throw in the towel before the fight starts, to prevent the brutal beating" The2Crippler
