I've just had a look in 'Gong Kakutougi' fight mag and the contact listed for Paresutora (nakai's gym) is 03 3984 3209.
Other contacts I found there are: Gutsman: 03 3325 1500 Pancrase: 03 5792 0815 www.so-net.ne.jp/pancrase/ Kiguchi Combat Wrestling: 042 726 1460 When are you hitting Japan? Nick |

Thanks for your help Nick.
Im going towards the end of june. Do you think going to ''parestra'' is the best place in tokyo for training. I heard its cheap compared to the other dojo's out there. This dojo seems to be producing alot of winners in the shooto competions out there. At every weight class they seem to have someone in the top 3 ranking. Should I actually ring them up? In your experience do they normally have an english speaking person in the dojo? I know Yuki speaks english. Any other info would be greatly appreciated again thankyou Matt |

Just a bit of showing off, but in my LIMITED Japanese language experience, I can say that Nakai's 'Paresutora' gym, is in fact the Japanese/English (Katakana) way of saying 'Palaestra', which was in fact the area which ancient Greek Pankratists fought...I think!
Try saying 'Paresutora' fast in a pseudo-Japanese way, it sounds like Palaestra! |

Ive got a few more questions.
Nick you know the number you gave me for Yuki's dojo do I need to put on the tokyo area code also? Where is the best place to stay while in tokyo? Ive heard its very expensive. Has anyone here stayed in tokyo for any length of time? Would it be worth staying in a hotel as im only there for 2 months? thanks |

Hi Gunyo Kogusoku,
This isnt the exact date but most likely 19th of june onwards. Where are the best places to stay in tokyo, in terms of value for money etc? Today I rang what I thought was the Palestra dojo, I got the number slighty wrong, and I was speaking to some guy who didnt speak any english-I later found out that Id rung the local buddist temple in tokyo. I eventually found the correct number 03 5984 3209, but I got the answer phone message, because over there it was probably about 9:00pm as they are 9 hours ahead. |

costs ... | ||

Matt - there was an in depth radio programme on the other day going into Japanese culture and vital info for travelers who were planning to go and watch the world cup, for about 3-4 weeks.
The expert guy reckoned that if you budgeted well you could get by on about 5,000 a month (although I'm sure you could shave some of that of if you were frugal). Dunno if thats of any use to you. |

Re: costs ... | ||

My advice Matt, is to not stay in the Tokyo area at all. The rent is just astronomical. You can easily spend up to 300 quid a night at some of the hotels. You might be able to find a cheap Gaijin House (God! I hate that sfuking word!), but it will most likely be a one room, shoebox type affair. There are a few places you can go to in Kanagawa prefecture, which is quite close to Tokyo and you can save quite a bit of cash that way. However, you have to book it in advance, because there's always a demand for places like this with foreigners in Japan. Cheers, Steve |

Been doing a bit of research, and if you want to stay in Tokyo, the best place is the Suidobashi YMCA. 5000 Yen a night (About 28 quid) and free internet access. Tokyo Young Men's Christian Association 7-1 Mitoshiro-cho Kanda Chiyoda-ku Tokyo, 101-0053 Japan Tel/Fax- 03-3293-1921 03-3293-1928 Hope that can be of some help Steve |

Thanks Steve and Opash that was a great help.
Today I managed to get through to Yuki's dojo (not the buddist temple again). Ive got his email address and the cost of training for 2 months is: 20000 yen introduction 10000 yen per month from then onwards. So for me it worked out to cost 170.55 total-not bad considering the cost of training elsewhere in tokyo. |

Ive got the address for Yuki gym in tokyo:
Caeser Ekoda B1-101, Toyotama-Kita 1-6-13, Nerima-ku, 174-0012 Do you think there are many hostels/hotels near here. I understand that it would be cheaper to stay outside of tokyo but Ive also heard it would take ages to travel to the centre of tokyo from the outskirts. |

I can give more info once I've lived in Tokyo a bit longer but here's some stuff:
1. Suidobashi is very central. It's also 'fight capital' of Tokyo cos that's where Tokyo Dome and Korakoen Hall (home of Shooto and Pancrase events) are. Also lots of fight shops there, including an awesome video rental place. 2. That youth hostel is cheap. Another good place is Kimi Ryokan in Ikebukuro. I stayed there a few nights and its about the same price. They speak english. I got the number from Lonely Planet or something. 3. Try to rent a room with a fellow foreigner who's already there, particularly a JET. That's what I'm doing. It's costing me Y30,000 for his loft for a full month. That's in Saitama, though. There's a JET noticeboard on the internet which I advertised on to get my place. I'm an ex-JET so I got alot of offers. Not sure how an 'outsider' would get on. 4. However, if you do want to go to Saitama (a commuter county next to Tokyo), why not go to Omiya and train at Enson's gym. I'm gonna try that and I'll report back if it's any good. 5. That 5,000 a month figure is rubbish. I took two different 14-day holidays in Japan and each one cost 1500 including flights, accommodation, souveniers and everything. You just have to search around. I might be able to help people out once I'm settled, but my first priority right now is to make sure my trip isn't a disaster! |

''Omiya and train at Enson's gym''
Yeah I might look into it. As its in omiya I presume it will be much cheaper to stay out there. I give them a ring tonight. cheers Nick Matt |

are there any dojo's that you can stay in?
|
Are there any mma dojo's in Tokyo or on its outskirts whether pancrase/shooto etc, which offer accomodation which you can pay to stay in.
I know it would be expensive but it would give peace of mind- wouldnt have to worry about getting lost. Chris Brennan and Pat Miletich offer accomodation I thought there would be a possibility that a gym in tokyo would do the same. Does Frank Shamrock's place offer accomodation? What are their training times like? thankyou |

Re: are there any dojo's that you can stay in?

The first dojo that spring up in my mind, is the Kodokan. They have a kind of dormitory for foreign students who are staying for short periods of time. From memory, the place isn't exactly luxurious. And I don't exactly know how much they charge for accomodation or if there are any requirements to qualify for a room. I'll ask one of my Sensei next Wednesday. They are at the dojo almost every day, so they'll be in a better position to know. Cheers, Steve |

It would be great if you could stay at the kodokan lodgings and train in a shooto gym else where but I very much doubt they would allow that.

Re: hi | ||

Wouldn't be any harm to ask. BTW, the lodgings at the Kodokan for a single room are the same price as a room at the Suidobashi Y. Matt, are you planning on training with Enson in Omiya? Cheers, Steve |
